Middle aged woman typing illustrating finding work after age 50.

Finding work after 50 can be difficult, despite laws in many jurisdictions that prevent it. Sadly, age discrimination is alive and well in the workplace, usually masquerading as marking a candidate as “overqualified.” Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make it easier to find a new job, or even a whole new career, well over the age of 50. Here’s what to do.

Lean on Your Network

You’ve probably been in the workforce long enough to develop an extensive network. Reach out to your former colleagues, bosses, and even those you previously supervised. They already know you and your skills, so they are far less likely to be concerned about your age.

Update Your Resume

To find work after age 50, be sure to remove all references to your age, such as graduation dates, from your resume. Also, cut your previous experience to the most recent and relevant positions. Your resume should be no more than two pages long and should go back no more than 10 to 15 years. Any more than that could put you in the “overqualified” pile.

Be Confident

In many ways, your age is an asset. You’re experienced, and you know your way around the workplace. You’re less likely to get caught up in office drama, and you probably know what you want from your career. Use your interview to highlight all the advantages you have to offer, including examples of problems you’ve solved for previous employers. Finding work after 50 can be easier when you sell your assets.

Show Your Tech Skills

Some employers worry that more experienced applicants might struggle with the latest technology. Highlight your tech skills on your resume, use a professional-looking email address, and casually discuss technology during your interview.

Focus on Companies with Older Employees

The truth is, you’re less likely to be hired at a small startup where everyone is in their 20s. But plenty of companies have a range of staff ages, and truly value their more experienced employees. Do your research and focus on companies where you seem to be a good fit.

Work with a Staffing Agency

Staffing agencies offer a wealth of resources that are free for job hunters. Your recruiter will have access to a pool of companies that are ready to hire, as well as information on the type of employees they are looking to hire. He or she can also act as a coach, helping you perfect your resume and prepare for your interview. Once you land the job, you’ll even have access to ongoing advice and assistance.
