As demand for skilled labor continues to rise across the country, a major new investment is aiming to close the gap and create more career opportunities in the trades. The Lowe’s Foundation recently announced plans to commit $250 million toward training 250,000 skilled tradespeople by 2035, significantly expanding its previous workforce development efforts.

This move comes at a time when industries like construction, electrical, and plumbing are facing a growing shortage of workers. In fact, estimates show that hundreds of thousands of new construction workers are needed in 2026 alone to keep up with demand, highlighting the urgency behind initiatives like this.

The expanded program will focus on increasing access to training through partnerships with community colleges and nonprofit organizations, helping remove barriers that often prevent individuals from entering the trades. These efforts are designed not just to train workers, but to support long-term career growth through job placement and advancement opportunities.

A key part of the initiative also centers on connecting the next generation to career pathways. By enhancing platforms that link students and job seekers with employers and training programs, the foundation aims to make it easier for individuals—especially young people not currently in school or working—to explore and enter skilled trades careers.

This latest commitment builds on earlier progress, with tens of millions of dollars already invested into workforce programs nationwide. With that momentum, the foundation is on track to meet its previous training goals ahead of schedule, allowing for an even broader push to address workforce shortages across the country.

Efforts like this reflect a growing shift in how industries view workforce development. Skilled trades are increasingly recognized as essential to economic growth, offering stable, well-paying career paths while supporting infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing needs nationwide.
