Skilled Trades Jobs

Skilled trades people are always in demand in a wide range of industries. It’s a chance to work with your hands, lock in a stable career and see immediate fruits of your labor. Though most trade jobs are focused in manufacturing and construction, you can also find jobs in healthcare, transportation and advanced technology. You don’t need a four-year college degree, but you do need to be educated and trained. Additionally, you’ll need to earn a certification depending on your field. If your goal is to find a new, fulfilling job, considering a career in skilled trades is a great place to start!

Here’s how you can launch a fulfilling career in skilled trades.

Explore Careers

Before you get too invested in learning a skilled trade, it’s probably a good idea to learn about what kinds of jobs are out there. Though there are many paths to take, it helps if you have a target career in mind.

Skilled trades positions include auto mechanics, cabinetmakers, energy technicians, plumbers, pipefitters, CNC machine tool programmers, HVAC mechanics, iron and steel workers, elevator installers and repairers, millwrights, electricians, hairstylists and cosmetologists, dental assistants, brick masons and more. There’s a wide range of opportunities out there. Target an industry before you start acquiring skills. Depending on the industry, some companies will hire you and train you while you work. Others will require you have a degree or certificate before they bring you on.

Earn Your High School Diploma or GED

Most technical schools and apprenticeships will require a high school diploma. If you didn’t finish school, it’s important to get your GED. Information regarding how to obtain your GED in California can be found here, and there are a lot of free online resources to help you prepare. Low-income youth can also enroll in the Job Corps, which is sponsored by the Labor Department. This offers the chance to earn your GED while you’re working and receiving training.

Get More Training

Gaining extra training before you apply for jobs and apprenticeships – either an associate degree or certificate – helps to prove you have some foundational skills and a basic knowledge of what it’s like to work in a particular trade. Explore vocational schools, career colleges and technical institutes near you to see if they have coursework related to your field of choice.

Complete an Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are an amazing way to develop expertise in a skilled trade. You get paid to learn from experienced professionals in real work environments. Sponsored by employers, unions, industry associations and labor organizations, apprenticeships generally take between one and six years. You’ll receive relevant classroom instruction, training alongside a mentor, credentials – and best of all, regular paychecks.

Research Financial Help

Extra coursework comes with a cost, but don’t let that be a deterrent to pursuing a very rewarding career in skilled trades. Since skilled tradespeople are always in demand, there are lots of resources available to help minimize costs. Check out FAFSA, ROTC programs, scholarships sponsored by industry organizations, and even private companies.

With the proper preparation, you can find a new career in a short time and find your fit within the skilled trades industry. Eager and hardworking candidates are in high demand. Now is a great time to get your new career started!
